Something is terribly wrong with Google. I tweeted about this and tried to find out more info by searching for “This site may harm your computer” at twitter.
Update: After about 15 mins after I made this post, Google has fixed the issue. Phew!

Note: I have edited my original post after Kris from Pepperjam commented on the original post. Before Kris’s comment, I thought the slash in referral commission was for all publishers at Pepperjam but later found out that the slash was only imposed for publishers whose transparency ratings were under 3.

Here’s the revised post:

What used to be a relatively very high referral commission of $7 paid to publishers of all kind for every new valid referral, has now been slashed to 50 cents by Pepperjam Network for publishers with transparency rating under 3. Mine was 2 and I also got my referral income slashed.

This should not bother publishers having a transparency rating of 3 or more, but even if you have a transparency rating of 2, there’s nothing to worry about. What you need to do now is increase your transparency rating to at least 3 and guess what, it’s really easy to increase one’s transparency rating at Pepperjam. Here’re some recommendations from Pepperjam for increasing the transparency rating:

* Make sure your contact information is complete and accurate. Failure to provide accurate and verifiable contact information, including home or business address, telephone number, and e-mail may result in a low transparency score.

* Make sure you disclose ALL Web sites used for purposes of affiliate marketing on Pepperjam Network. If you build a new Web site you should add it to your PJN profile – similarly, if you stop using a particular Web site you should remove it from your profile.

* Make sure you disclose ALL promotional methods. DO NOT select a promotional method if you don’t use it. Make sure your promotional methods are accurate at all times. If you are not honest about the promotional methods you are using your transparency score may be reduced and you may be removed from certain programs.

* Contact a Pepperjam Network Representative at 877-796-5700 to verify your phone number. When you call mention that you are calling to verify your phone number on Pepperjam Network.

I was able to increase my transparency rating to 3 from 2 by updating my profile in accordance with the first 3 recommendations and I am also planning to a make a call to them to increase it even further. As soon as I reached 3, I got an email from Pepperjam Network Publisher Referral Program saying my referral commission was again increased to $7 from 50 cents.

Increased transparency rating give you a much needed advantage at Pepperjam Network. This is what Pepperjam has to say:

Affiliates with high transparency scores (4-5) may be eligible for higher payouts and may receive automatic acceptance into certain programs that affiliates with a lower transparency score may not gain acceptance to. Advertisers tend to see affiliates with transparency scores of 3 or higher as more dependable and as a result may offer special incentives to those affiliates – therefore, it is in your best interest to attain a transparency score at 3 or higher.

The point is, you should attempt to increase your transparency rating not just for increased referral commission from Pepperjam Network Publisher Referral Program but for increased payouts from all the programs that you endorse at Pepperjam.

Pepperjam Network is one hell of a good network. I love it for its generosity towards its publishers. If you don’t have a clue about what Pepperjam Network is, you might want to read my earlier post on Pepperjam Network.

The video presentation is targeted at beginners and does a great job of explaining the basics to them to build websites that would actually produce results for them. The Google team has carefully put up links on the slides that help to explore further about the things being explained in those slides. So, if you are an upcoming blogger or webmaster, go check this video presentation from Google so that you can get everything right, right from the start.

If you’d noticed, there was this option on Google Webmasters earlier to control Google’s crawl rate on your website. You could decrease or increase the crawl rate but most probably you had the “Increase Crawl Rate” option disabled. But no more, Google Webmasters has introduced an advanced setting that lets you alter crawl rate on your website. You can now increase or decrease the Google’s crawl rate the way you want.

Remember, increased crawl rate won’t make Google Bot come to your website more frequently. Crawl rate actually determines the time used by Google Bot to crawl your site on each visit. So, increased crawl rate would ensure that Google Bot would thoroughly go through your website on every visit rather than increasing the frequency of the crawls. It’s a good idea in most of the cases to increase your crawl rate by a certain amount than the default recommended value. However there might be cases when a user would want to use this option to decrease the crawl rate, specially when Google’s crawl is sucking up a considerable bandwidth and slowing down the server. If this is the case, a better option would be to move your files to a better server than decreasing the crawl rate.

For changing the crawl rate, you need to login to Google Webmasters, select the website you want to alter the crawl rate for, then go to Settings. You will see a setting called Crawl rate towards the bottom of the page. Now, select the option “Set custom crawl rate”. You will then see a slider, move the slider whichever side you want.

Remember, if you do set a custom crawl rate, the new rate will be in effect for 90 days after which it resets to Google’s recommended value.

Google has officially launched what it calls SearchWiki which lets logged in users to rearrange their search results. Google’s official blog states:

Today we’re launching SearchWiki, a way for you to customize search by re-ranking, deleting, adding, and commenting on search results. With just a single click you can move the results you like to the top or add a new site. You can also write notes attached to a particular site and remove results that you don’t feel belong. These modifications will be shown to you every time you do the same search in the future. SearchWiki is available to signed-in Google users. We store your changes in your Google Account. If you are wondering if you are signed in, you can always check by noting if your username appears in the upper right-hand side of the page.
The changes you make only affect your own searches. But SearchWiki also is a great way to share your insights with other searchers. You can see how the community has collectively edited the search results by clicking on the “See all notes for this SearchWiki” link.

Here’s a Youtube video from Google that shows how you can make use of the SearchWiki feature:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Ok fine, different sorts of people live in this world, and while I would not like to rearrange my search results and send it out to my friends, some might. I would also not like to waste my time commenting on search results, but again, there’re people different that me whom I share the same world and the same search engine with, who would want to do that. However, I really would love to tell Google what I was expecting when I was searching a particular keyphrase at Google, specially when I get weird results after submitting a long query for which Google shows some bullshit results and I am happy SearchWiki would let me communicate better with Google (if there would be someone at the other end to listen to me ).

Did you mark the sentence in bold in the quoted text taken from Google’s blog above? Google says “The changes you make only affect your own searches“. May be that’s true for now because Google still hasn’t collected enough data from its users so that it can incorporate it into its ranking algorithm, but what about say after 6 months or so. May be, Big G would want to use it. “May be” and only “May be” because I don’t know what Google would do. Experts need to carry various hit and trial experiments to find out what Google is doing right now and by no means I am an expert and I cannot say with even 0.(millions of zeros)0001% certainty what would Google do in the coming future.

I would want to present a scenario of what would happen if Google incorporates data from SearchWiki into its ranking algorithm. In the age where site owners, bloggers and webmasters fight a new war against each other every minute to stay on top of the Google hill, letting people see what others commented and letting users push web sites up and down the rankings would mean knocking the doors of spammers. As you would need a substantial amount of votes to change the rankings of a web site then, Google commentators might be hired just like Diggers are hired now. But as Google only lets people who are logged in to use this feature, may be Google wants to find out who are the ones spamming. May be Google would record the IPs of the persons commenting and find out what Gmail addresses they hold. May be commenting more than 100 times in a month would raise Google’s eyebrows then. You never know what Big G is up to. May be a day would come where votes from certain authoritative email addresses on the web would help you climb up the Google hill just like how links from authoritative sites help you right now and the other way round would also be true then. You cannot pay an authoritative blogger right now to link badly to your competitor’s blog and oust him from the competition but in the future you might be able to pay someone to vote your competitor down for a particular keyword.

What do you think Google plans to use SearchWiki for? Let’s discuss about this because SEO would not be the same if Google decides to use data from SearchWiki in its ranking algorithm, what do you say?

Bidvertiser is an exclusive CPC Ad Network, but with the addition of image ads, we might see an introduction to CPM as well. This announcement from Bidvertiser can actually be seen as a late response to the constant plea to incorporate image ads from publishers.

I have monetized my other blog with Bidvertiser ads and was considering to add Bidvertiser ads on this blog soon. I am extremely happy to hear this from Bidvertiser as they now hold the capability to give a complete monetizing solution for my blog and moreover, Bidvertiser has really become a true Adsense alternative. Check out my earlier post if you want to read a full review on Bidvertiser versus Adsense. Bidvertiser will support the following image ad formats from now on:

Medium Rectangle – 300 x 250

Vertical Rectangle – 240 x 400

Large Rectangle – 336 x 280

Rectangle – 180 x 150

Full Banner – 468 x 60

Half Banner – 234 x 60

Vertical Banner – 120 x 240

Square Button – 125 x 125

Leaderboard – 728 x 90

Wide Skyscraper – 160 x 600

Skyscraper – 120 x 600

Half Page Ad – 300 x 600

This announcement from Bidvertiser came yesterday, so it might take a while before advertisers at Bidvertiser add their image ad campaigns, so my guess is publishers still need to wait for a week or so before they are fully able to serve image ads on their web sites as the inventory for image ads need to be filled to a considerable amount for publishers to get a constant flow of image ads.

Bidvertiser has shown that it respects its users’ voices and that Bidvertiser is here to stay. If you have not joined Bidvertiser yet, go ahead and join Bidvertiser and stop missing out on an opportunity to monetize your web site with ads from this wonderful ad network.
