Review of Fotolia – Earn money by selling pictures online

Posted by Ghatozkat on November 13, 2008

fotoliaFotolia is a stock photo agency where people can buy and sell images. This is a blog related to making money online and I know my readers would be more interested in the selling part than the buying part and hence, I will be focusing on the selling pictures part of Fotolia in this post. Fotolia really has a lot of earning potential. For each photograph sold, the photographer receives a commission based on the type of license sold to the customer.

There are requirements about size and quality of the photographs that must be met before the photographs are accepted by Fotolia. More on the requirements later. After you submit the photographs, they land up in a queue where they are reviewed by moderators. If moderators decide that your photographs are not good enough, they will get rejected and those that aren’t given the highest reviews but are still considered worthy are sometimes added to the ‘Free’ section. If your photographs land up in the Free section, you can still earn. You are not paid a commission generated from sales (because there’re no possibility of sales in the Free section :-) ) but you will be paid the advertising fees that Fotolia receives. This fee varies depending on the demographics and actions of the visitors to the site and how many images each visitor downloads.

How can I earn from Fotolia?

As talked about above, you can earn from Fotolia by selling pictures online. Upload your best shot photographs to Fotolia. For each photograph sold, the photographer receives a commission based on the type of license sold to the customer.

How much can I earn from Fotolia?

You get commissions on the photographs you sell. The minimum commission earned is 33% of the sales price. You may earn additional commission depending on your rank.

How do I get paid?

They pay you using either Paypal or Moneybookers. If you don’t have a PayPal account, you can join PayPal from here. If you don’t have a Moneybookers account, you can join Moneybookers from here. You get paid in credits which you can convert into real money and cash out whenever you want. The credit exchange rate is different for different members. For me, it’s 1 Credit = £ 0.57. Mind one thing though, Fotolia requires you to upload a valid government issued photo id before requesting a payout. If a valid id is not uploaded, members are not allowed to cash out Fotolia credits.

What’s the minimum payout?

Fotolia states:

Fotolia charges No Fee for transactions over 50 credits. Transactions less than 50 credits will be charged a low fixed price of 1 credit whatever the amount of the conversion. Thus you can transfer money as soon as your account contains at least two eligible credits.

This means you can cash out to your Moneybookers and Paypal account whenever you want provided you have got more than 2 credits in your account.

What picture formats does Fotolia support?

Following formats are supported, requirements are also mentioned:

    Vectors in a SVG format

Images and illustrations in a JPEG format (at least 1600 x 2400 pixels)

Panoramic files must have a ratio between 0.26 and 0.5 (small side / large side). Your files must be less than 20 MB.

What are the upload options available?

You can use one of the upload options – simple upload, JAVA upload, or FTP. After the images are uploaded, you will be prompted to enter some important information such as keywords and title.

Does Fotolia pay Referral Commission?

Yes Fotolia allows you to refer other people to Fotolia and offers a commission for such activities. Fotolia states:

The reward percentage depends on the type of affiliate transaction (sale or purchase) and is displayed under the “my profile” section of the member home page. The affiliate relation between the member and their affiliate takes effect when the new account is created. The affiliation relationship lasts for a limited time. This limited time is displayed under the “my profile” section of your member home page. During this time the referring member will be rewarded by commission on all transactions of their affiliates.

This means, you can earn from your referrals only for a certain time after you refer them to Fotolia and the percentage of their earnings that you would receive is displayed under your “my profile” section. This percentage varies with user demographics and the kind of user you refer, for example you would get a higher commission from buyers than sellers.

The bottom line is: If you have a digital camera that can take photographs higher than 1600 x 2400 pixels, you can earn by selling photographs at Fotolia. So waste no more time, and join Fotolia now.
